OUR FAVORITE MAGIC MOVIES LIST

For those of you who love the magic movies and the stories of fantasy lands and mystic creatures we present Magic Movies. There have been many magic movies over the years that could be considered magickal movies. The criteria for magic movies can be quite broad. These magic movies usually feature wizards or witches, strange unusual creatures, bizzare and magical events. The magic movies are usually set in a beautiful landscape with fun and fantastic castles, caves or settings in the sky. Because the imagination is filled with illusion, and illusory dreams, magic movies provide a direct connection to the subconscious. Perhaps this is why after we have viewed any of these magic movies, we are forced to think in new ways, and to discuss these movies over and over.

Ghostbusters II (1989, director Ivan Reitman)

Although not usually billed as a magic movie, or movie about magic, Ghost Busters 2 certainly qualifies as such. The recognition of Ray's Occult Bookstore as the place you can find hidden knowledge. The plotline, presents an ancient sorcerer with evil intentions to possess Dana's baby. The idea that an otherworld threat is being fed by the negative emotions of this world is certainly an indication highly regarded in magic. This magic movies can really be viewed as magickal in nature.

Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005, Director Andrew Adamson)

This inclusion in magic movies is based on the classic C.S. Lewis novel is about a magical wardrobe that transports four children into a magical land filled with talking beavers, centaurs, and other strange mythical beasts. Unfortunately the entire land has been cursed with winter all year round, a curse that was conjured up by the evil White Witch. The good news is that another mystical creature in the form of a Lion is on its way to save Narnia. Of course we are sure to add the newly released Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian to our list of magic movies as soon as we add it to our collection.

Although we do not have a wardrobe we do have a magickal herb cabinet.

Sword in the Stone (1963 Director: Wolfgang Reitherman)

The magic movies of Disney's Sword in the Stone was the story of King Arthur at the age of 12, and is added to our list of favorite magic movies. King Arthur comes across a sword that only he can pull from the stone it is stuck in. During most of the movie, King Arthur is taught by an old and wise wizard, named Merlin. One of the best scenes in Sword in the Stone comes when Merlin uses his magic to duel Mim the witch.

The Neverending Story (1984 Director: Wolfgang Peterson)

The Neverending Story magic movies is made up of strange mystical creatures like wolf-vampires, rock creatures and a giant flying dog. There is clearly something magical about the book that Bastian has stolen from the mysterious man at the small antique bookshop. The book becomes Bastian's reality. This may not qualify in your book as belonging to the list of magic movies, but it is one of my favorites.

Pan's Labyrinth (2005 Director: Guillermo Del Toro)

A fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain, this choice for magic movies blends the elements of terror both real and imaginary. The young Ophilia, drawn into the home of her new stepfather watches with terror the goings on around her, including the abuse of her mother. A flying fairy like creature leads Ophilia on a fantasy adventure where Pan, who abides in the labyrinth, believing Ophilia to be the princess of the labyrinth, gives her three tasks to prove her royalty. This touching tale reveals the battle between good and evil, between heroes and villains, in both the real world aboveground and the mystical land below.

The Prestige (2006 Director: Christopher Nolan)

The Prestige is a little bit different than most of the magic movies on our list. It's definitely a more adult, dark movie and rather than fantasy magic like wizards and witches it is just a story of two regular feuding magicians. The art of illusion is still powerfully magic. The Prestige features great performance, a touching story and an ending that will keep you thinking for a while.

Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001, 2002, 2003 Director Peter Jackson)

The Lord of the Rings is well known for its hobbits and battles but magic plays a big part in the magic movies as well. There are two wizards, Gandalf and Saruman, that have important parts on the two opposing sides in the Lord of the Rings series as they battle over the ring that rules them all. The elves, long known for magic, bring a beautiful addition to this series of magic movies.

Theme Song to LABYRINTH (1986 Jones Music and Brookwood Productions; KY)

The water's slowly spinning round and round.
Heading, heading ever, forever down.
I hope I don't get sucked, quite right in....
Quite, right in. Quite, right in.
... not quite yet.

Forever walking round the paths,
Trying to find my way out.
Forever walking round the paths,
I will never get out....
Of the labyrinth... of the labyrinth... of the labyrinth... of the labyrinth....

But, I know...
That if we try...
Try to use our mind's eye,
We can make the walls come,
Tubmlin' down.

(Walls all around.)
Walls of the labyrinth come tumblin' down.
Walls come tumbling down.
The walls come tumbling down,
all around... all around... all around... all around.
