SYMBOLISM

Based on the HISTORY of Norse mythology the symbols of Thor, Odin, and Freya are incorporated on this Asatru altar. Thor's Hammer is a symbol of the struggle against chaos and evil. It's the weapon used by Thor against giants, monsters, and other trollish folk who threaten the common good. It seems particularly appropriate in these troubled times. The Hammer was also important in the hallowing of hearth and home, in marriage ceremonies, and the invocation of fertility.

The Valknut's three interlocking shapes and nine points suggest rebirth, pregnancy, and cycles of reincarnation. The nine points are also suggestive of the Nine Worlds (and the nine fates) of Norse mythology. Their interwoven shape suggests the belief of the interelatedness of the three realms of earth, hel, and the heavens, and the nine domains they encompass. The Valknut is also an important symbol to many follwers of the Asatru faith, who often wear it as a symbol of the faith.

The flower is a representation of Freya, or we can substitute a boar for Frey. When making this Asatru Altar, we sought the history contained in the Norse Mythology and recognized the old gods of Thor, Odin, and Freya. We wanted to honor Thor for his strength and might. Thor and honor are synonymous and go hand in hand. Thor is the warriors warriors. We wanted to honor Odin creator of the runes as cited in Norse mythology, and head of the gods of asgard. We wanted to honor Freya for adding beauty to a world that can be cold and harsh at times. It is for these gods of asgard of asatru, Odin, Thor, and Freya that we present this altar, recognizing the days of old, and the gods of honor and might.
While historians of today call the Norse Asatru legends mythology, we know that they are the history of the people of the North. These epics of the Norse, even though called mythology, are based on verbal tradition that was passed down from generation to generation. The legendary Norse mythology accounts of Odin, Freya, and Thor are based on the tradition of people that were strong, mobile, and survivors. Odin, Thor, and Freya passed down their skills so that the people of the North could survive.
Never disregard the history of the ancients like the people of Asatru and Norse mythology, their accounts of the gods of Odin, Thor, and Freya are based more in reality than we care to admit. The ancients like Thor, Odin, and Freya worked with mankind in the days of old to provide us with the skills to survive and move on to the next phases of life. The Norse mythology accounts are held true by the followers of Asatru, and hail and honor the gods of Asgard Thor, Odin, and Freya!
