According to santharia's beastiary, there are 24 ways the word for the mythical creatures has been spelled throughout time; Gryffen, girphinne, greffon, grefyne, grephoun, griffen, griffin, griffion, griffon, griffoun(e), griffown, griffun, griffyn, grifon, grifyn, griphin, griphon, gryffin, gryffon, gryfon, gryfoun(e), gryphen, gryphin, and gryphon.
The griffon is one of the most famous of mythical creatures. Documented since ancient times by the Phoenicians and Babylonians. It has the body and tail of a lion and has the wings, beak and head of an eagle. This combination makes the griffon a truly awesome beast. The griffon represents strength and vigilance and is recognized as a powerful guardian.
The image of the griffon was used in art, architecture and mythology of many early civilizations. In Minoan Crete, such creatures were royal animals and guardians of throne rooms. The griffon has been reguarded as a symbol of divine power and a protector, one of the most revered of the mythical creatures.
"The griffin was a common feature of "animal style" Scythian gold. It was said to inhabit the Scythian steppes that reached from the modern Ukraine to central Asia; there gold and precious stones were abundant and when strangers approached to gather the stones, the creatures would leap on them and tear them to pieces. The Scythians used giant petrified bones found in this area as proof of the existence of these griffins and thus keep outsiders away from the gold and precious stones." (from Wikipedia 17 August 2007)
